Since 2012, Joe Whitbread and Jo Phillips from Jo(e) Social Media in Lacombe, Alberta have been speaking in-schools, with parents and with school administrators about the opportunities and difficulties for kids on social media.
For the most part, kids are on their own when it comes to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, Snapchat and even gaming apps. Social media is now an invisible fact-of-life in most households and at school, and kids are joining these channels whether teachers and parents are there to see them through it or not. There are so many opportunities for our youth to be using social media channels in a positive way and develop a positive social media history, but they're just isn't much guidance when adult leaders, parents, and teachers have a hard enough time keeping up with it (or behaving unkindly there) themselves.
Starting a social media conversation is the most important part and we’d love to invite you to the parent night on learning more about social media safety.
