RE: Grade 6 - Grade 9 shift to online learning until April 12, 2021
(April 5 - April 9, 2021 is our Spring Break)
Thank you for your patience and support as we continue to navigate the challenges of COVID-19 and what is best for our students. École Mother Teresa School has been deemed an outbreak by Alberta Health Services (Outbreak number 2021-EI-2883), with half of our cases being identified as the B117 variant. The cases this past weekend have continued to have an impact on our entire school community: both staff and students.
Therefore, the Grade 6 - 9 classes will be shifting temporarily to online learning beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, March 24, 2021- April 1, 2021. We will resume in-person learning on April 12, 2021. In collaboration with Alberta Health Services, we will reassess in-person or online learning the weekend prior to April 12, 2021. Please note that the week of April 5 - April 9, 2021, is our Spring Break and there is no school for that week.
All Grade 6 - 9 classes will be offered online learning following a weekly class schedule so that students can work directly with their teachers throughout the day. The specific details will be communicated to your child in a live Google Meet on Wednesday, March 23, 2021, with their homeroom teacher. This will ensure that we will be able to keep moving forward with the curriculum and to continue the strong learning that is happening within classes. Your child’s homeroom teacher will contact families via email this evening with further details.
It is important to note that we will be keeping the Grade 5 students with in-person learning at EMTS as they have not been affected by the current situation. All of the cases are in Grade 6 - 9 classrooms. Where possible we want to maintain normalcy, we see this opportunity to maintain the same structure for our Grade 5 students as an important part of mitigating this pandemic.
Please know that this decision was not made lightly and, as we continue to realize the strains that COVID-19 places on us, we need to be flexible with our decision making and place our students and their learning at the center of all conversations. We will support your family with technology if your child requires it. Scheduling for technology pick-up will be available beginning tomorrow.
As always, do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, school counsellors, and school administrators for additional support or clarification. While this is a challenging time, we continue to trust in the Lord with all our heart, leaning on each other for support and companionship. Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
Have a safe and blessed evening. God bless,
Kathleen Finnigan, Superintendent of Schools
